Sources, pathways and impacts on the AQUAtic environment: Identifying solutions to mitigate MANganese issues
AQUA-MANganese Project is an EPA funded research project. It has brought together specialists with expertise in water chemistry, analytical chemistry, hydrogeology, geology, civil engineering, earth observation, data analytics and policy to provide: (1) an independent monitoring program evaluating water quality that will identify the sources, fate and transport of manganese in raw water sources; (2) deliver recommendations for a sampling and monitoring plan which can also be implemented elsewhere in Ireland; (3) provide recommendations and solutions to mitigate against Mn exceedances and (4) disseminate the outcome of the research to stakeholders and the general public.
The project award was announced in late 2021 and the project began in March 2022 and runs until the end of September 2026. Project code is 2021-HE-1055.
The AQUAMAN Project aims to identify the sources, pathways and fate of Mn in the drinking water in Counties Cavan and Monaghan. To reach these objectives, AQUA-MAN has brought together specialists with expertise in water chemistry, analytical chemistry, hydrogeology, geology, civil engineering, earth observation, data analytics and policy. The project team includes members of the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway), the Health Service Executive (HSE), and the National Federation of Group Water Schemes (NFGWS). In addition, members of Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) and Monaghan and Cavan Co. Co.’s to act in an advisory capacity to AQUA-MAN and make all relevant data available.
